eBay May Accept Bitcoin Payments in the Future

eBay may be one of the companies that will be accepting bitcoin in the future. eBay is one of the largest e-commerce platforms in the world, and is currently in talks about the potential of starting to accept cryptocurrency payments.

The revelation was made by the senior vice president of eBay Americas, Scott Cutler, who said in a talk with Yahoo Finance that eBay is in serious discussions on this subject. If eBay will finally make this decision, it will be the first very high profile company to start accepting cryptocurrency payments and could represent a new push for bitcoin.

eBay has started serious talks about bitcoin payments

Cutler said that the company is not yet there, but it is seriously considering working with cryptocurrencies. He explained:

This is a trend that everybody is talking about, but sadly, at eBay, we don’t currently accept bitcoin as a form of payment. We’re seriously considering it as these cryptocurrencies become more of a mainstream” payment instrument, but “we’re not quite there yet.

eBay is already connected, in a way, to this market, as the e-commerce platform is a very common source for miners to purchase hardware equipment or for anyone interested to buy cryptocurrency related items.

For the moment, there is no plan from eBay to start integrating cryptocurrency payments, but the fact that discussions are on related to this is a positive thing for the future of bitcoin and an indication that it could become mainstream in the near future.

Previously this year, a rumor indicated that Amazon was also planning to accept bitcoin payments. However, the rumor was then denied. On the other hand, Alibaba's co-founder Jack Ma stated that bitcoin was not for him, potentially revealing that his company will not be using bitcoin in the near future.

A push-back for bitcoin payments came this month, when Steam, one of the most popular video game distribution platforms, stated that it stopped accepting bitcoin payments because of the high fees associated to these transactions and bitcoin's volatility.
