The Next Intel Core i5 Becomes a Core i7?
A while ago we talked about the Core i3 becoming a Core i7 but now Intel is making more changes and the Intel Core i5 becomes a Core i7 as well. Confusing right?
According to a new listing from the SiSoftware Benchmark database, we will soon have a new Core i5 processor model. One that has 6 physical cores, as the existing model, but also 12 execution threads. This is not a common feature on i5 processors on the desktop. In general, hypethreading is reserved for i7 models. In fact, the next Core i5 will be an Core i7 from the 8000 series, bringing a productivity boost to those who don't want to spend a lot of money on a more expensive model.
This change is very welcome, and we can only hope that other changes to the Intel processor series will be revealed. For example, it wouldn't hurt if the next Core i7 had 8 physical cores with hyperthreading, since the Core i9 would still jump to 10 cores.
Sure, we are still talking about Skylake processors, with some optimization, but they should still bring performance boosts and benefits if they are not too expensive as they currently if you look at what AMD has to offer. We sure hope that Intel will do more with the 10’th series of Core CPUs but until then we just have to wait and see.
